TRAINING/NUTRITION BLOG: 08/18/13: Don't Take Unscheduled Rest Days

Today's training: Don't take unscheduled rest days.

A long time ago I read an autobiography by Chuck Norris, written in the 80s. I don't recall the title, or the exact wording, but there was a section where Mr. Norris talked about his daily training.

The synopsis of it was that some days he (just like everyone else) just didn't feel like training. He said that on those days, although he didn't want to or feel like it, he would tell himself that he would only do a light workout that day, rather than do nothing, because if he took the day off it would be easier to take the next day off and the next.

This is a lesson I have taken to heart my whole life. I really, really wanted to just lay around today. I told myself that I'd only do five rounds of this today, but when I got to five, I decided seven rounds was possible, and by the time I got done with the seventh, all 10 rounds were doable.

By the time I left the desert today, I felt motivated and recharged. I recall many, many times when I felt the same way and told myself to just take it easy that day. Most of the time after getting into my "easy" workout for the day, I felt ready to go and ended up doing way more than I'd planned.

Moral?

Next time you feel like taking the day off (unless it is a scheduled rest day) just tell yourself that you will do a light workout. You'll feel better just having done something rather than slacking, and you will probably find you have more in the tank than you thought.
