Had to learn the hard way...
I have learned to listen to my inner voice about most things, how to read people, who to trust, etc..
I will probably never learn to listen when it comes to my own training. Part of an experimental deadlift program I am attempting included four sets of four reps with 90% 1-rep max. For me, this meant 4 x 4 at 455lbs, or just about two pounds shy of double my bodyweight. This is a specialized program, that only a powerlifter wearing a crutch like a weight belt should try. I would wear a belt as soon as I would wear ballet slippers. No belt for me. If you can't lift it without assistance equipment, you can't lift it.
My inner voice told me three reps at this weight was appropriate, but my ego told me four. Rep four felt really bad, and I definitely knocked something out of alignment in my hip. Nothing a few weeks and a bottle of ibuprofen won't fix.
Deadlifts...
1 x 4 at 455# (this was supposed to be 4 sets).
