Jim - Wondering what your thoughts are on protein shakes?  I've done them in the past with spinach blended in as a way to get some greens and also as something to have besides eggs in the morning. But the recipe I use to do did call for half a banana and a spoonful of peanut butter.

I would definitely say no on the protein shake. The only time I recommend protein shakes is immediately after a workout, when your body can handle the higher sugar. I also recommend them to someone trying to gain weight or muscle, and who is doing a lot of strength training.

The digestion process starts by chewing nutrients. That is what our body expects to do. When we take in lots of calories instantly it causes blood sugars to rise excessively and then fall.

The shake with the banana and peanut butter would be something I would not have a problem with if it was right after a really heavy strength training or sprint session that depleted lots of glycogen. Also, the only BIG qualifier is that the person was already very lean and was worried about maintaining weight, or was trying to gain weight. A banana and peanut butter is like something a bodybuilder would add to a shake to try to bulk up.
